Every month we compile a list of students doing great things across the Wiregrass.  We have so many talented students in our area.  Wiregrass Parents joins with their families and schools to celebrate their achievements!

Dothan City Schools Raises $63k for Wiregrass United Way

Dothan City School Employees answered the call and raised $63,480 for the Wiregrass United Way 2020 Campaign!

Over $20,000 more than 2019 to help local organizations serving the Wiregrass community!

Congratulations to Selma Street Elementary for the highest per capita giving school in the Dothan City Schools WUW campaign this year! Highlands Elementary School came in as runner up!

Coppinville Cheerleaders Qualify for Nationals

Congratulations to the EHS Competition Cheer Team on their first place win, qualifying them for nationals at Disney! Special congratulations to former Eagles Kadence Langford and Maya Wise and our own Brooke Elrod!

NMA 3rd Graders Write Cereal Box Book Reports

Mrs. Gilley’s 3rd grade class at Northside Methodist Academy read chapter books and wrote cereal box book reports. Each child designed his/her own cereal box and presented it to the class.

Carroll Art Teacher Designs Banners for Downtown Ozark

If you are downtown, you will notice the new banners!  These beautiful additions to the square were designed by CHS Art Teacher, Ms. Kami Bolton.

Mixon Intermediate Names Teacher of the Year

Congratulations to Mrs. Katie Dansby for being selected as the Mixon Teacher of the Year! The students, staff, and especially Principal Lowery and AP Andrews sure are lucky to have you! Mrs. Dansby is the lead special education teacher at Mixon school and specifically works with 5th grade students! Mrs. Dansby serves as a mentor teacher for new special education staff members and has been a special education teacher for Ozark City Schools for 15 years! Congratulations again Mrs. Katie Dansby!

Slingluff Student Wins Farm City Poster Contest

Lauran Pippin won 1st place in the Farm City Poster Contest! She was recognized at the Dothan Opera House and awarded a $100 gift card as well as her second grade teacher, Mrs. Ard. Way to go Lauran!

Providence Girls Cross Country Wins State

State Champions!! The PCS girls cross country team won the 3A State Championship.  Our boys also finished strong placing 3rd overall.  Individual accomplishments include Conner Patterson placing 1st, Grace Crim 3rd, and Millie Talmadge 4th.  Madelyn Patterson and Anne Marie Blaxton finished in the top 15.  Congratulations to all!  Go Eagles!

2020 Early Co. Reach Scholars

The 2020 Early County REACH Signing Ceremony was held November 20, 2020.  We are so very proud of our new Scholars:  Jakobe Chrispen, Jada Conley, Calaya Kimbrough and Nevaeh Salter, Vivianna Tellez-Hernandez.  Congratulations

Enterprise Auto Students Build Bikes for Toys for Tots

Enterprise High School’s advanced automotive class helped Coffee County Family Services with their Toys for Tots drive by assembling bicycles and tricycles! Teacher, Steve Icenogle, says he has have never seen them have this much fun while working! Proud of these Enterprise High School Wildcats!

Zion Chapel Robotics Team Wins

The Zion Chapel Robotics Team competed in the National BEST Robotics Competition through Troy University on Saturday, November 21.  This year’s theme was “Outbreak” and the game objective was to isolate infected cells from the uninfected and immune. The ZC Robo Rebels won the game portion of the event racking up over 1000 points for Robot Performance, and placed 3rd in Engineering Notebook and Critical Design Presentation.

Prevention Project Youth Council Play Santa for Seniors

The Youth Council was honored to help Lifted Higher Ministries shop for much needed items for the elderly! We bought items for 50 seniors all to be donated. We hope that this brings some comfort and joy to those who need it during this season.

Holly Hill Provides Food for 100+ Families During Holidays

Thank you to our entire Holly Hill Family for the tremendous contribution of canned food/non-perishables. Over 3400 items were donated. We are so excited to be able to donate to over 100 families in the local community during this holiday season.

Girard Intermediate Spelling Bee

Girard Intermediate held the annual Spelling Bee.  Each class sent a student to participate in the school-wide Spelling Bee. After several rounds, the winners were determined.  First Place:  Destiny Gilbert  Second Place:  Paradyse Battle  Third Place:  Daniel Maddox

Rucker Boulevard Jr. Beta Collects Food for Christian Mission

Dothan City Schools Secretary Named State Secretary of Year

Recently, the Council for Leaders in Alabama Schools (CLAS) awarded Dothan City School Central Office Secretary, Kimberly McNeally as the 2020 Secretary of the Year for District 2 in the state of Alabama.

McNeally serves as the Secretary for Dothan City School’s Curriculum Services and has been an integral part of DCS for 14 years. McNeally oversees and organizes the workflow for everyone in the Curriculum Services area.

Dothan City Schools Curriculum Director Maria Johnson, who nominated McNeally said, “Through all of the changes Dothan City Schools have seen in the past few years, Mrs. McNeally has remained steadfast throughout all of it. She has an amazing way of staying calm, organized, and works far ahead of challenges before they become problems. In fact, she is the lead person so many in the district come to when they need assistance. She willingly gives of her time and expertise and will follow through to make sure the job gets done.”

Ozark Boys & Girls Club Performs Hamilton

Under the direction of Ms. Mikayla Sullivan, the Performing Arts Crew, performed “Hamilton Highlights” from the Broadway smash hit in downtown Ozark at the Amphitheater.  The crew received a rousing ovation from the many attendees who clearly enjoyed the show.  Performing Arts is just one of the many programs provided by The Boys & Girls Club of Ozark as part of our mission to help our kids to GREAT FUTURES! Also, a big THANKS to the Dale County Performing Arts Council!!

Lisenby Singers Chosen

Congratulations to the 2020-2021 Lisenby Singers! Lisenby Singers is an auditioned choir made up of Kindergarten, First Grade, and Second Grade students. Cortner Named Carroll Teacher of the Year

Congratulations to CHS Teacher of the Year, Renee Cortner.  She is a veteran English teacher and has been with CHS for 3 years.  She teaches 12th grade Literature and AP Lit for CHS.  She is a valuable asset to our Peer Helpers organization as well as a department leader for our Remote Learning Support Team.  She has served in various leadership roles while at Carroll, including mentor teacher.  She is greatly valued by the Admin, staff, students, and parents of CHS.  Congrats to Renee Cortner!

Ashton is the publisher of Wiregrass Parents magazine. A lifelong resident of the Wiregrass, she grew up in Blakely, Ga. Her love of journalism began on her high school newspaper and continued at Troy University where she received her print journalism degree. After graduating, she worked with WTVY-TV for nearly a decade. She and her husband, Chris, have been married since 2012. They have one daughter, Alexis, as well as a dog, Jackson, and a cat, Cooper.
