We Congratulate Elizabeth Whitton!
Hillcrest Elementary School
November’s Teacher of the Month is described simply as being “the best.”
Elizabeth Whitton taught Lauren Poss’s oldest daughter in first grade. Poss says Whitton is outgoing and fun and makes every day special for her students.
“She goes out of her way to be involved in her students’ lives outside of the classroom and celebrates their wins and comforts them during tough times.”
“When teaching, especially in the younger grades, communication with the parents is vital. They want and need to know what’s happening inside my classroom… as they should,” Whitton says.
“To know that a child had such a wonderful year in my classroom that they would take the time to nominate me, is truly an honor! It makes my heart beam with pride.”
After teaching first grade for eight years, Whitton has moved to the kindergarten hall of Hillcrest Elementary School in Enterprise. She says, “Kindergarten is fast paced! They like to keep moving. We dance, sing, act out stories, and move around to keep everyone engaged.”
Whitton says she has always had a deep love for children and decided to pursue a career in elementary education in college. She says her students keep her motivated.
“Seeing their smiling faces every day, them loving you on the good and bad days, and being their safe place or comfort. Every day is what we make it, and we choose to make learning FUN!”
Seeing her students’ minds at work and witnessing their “ah-ha” moments is the most rewarding part of the job for Whitton, and she hopes her students leave her classroom knowing they are loved, how to treat one another, and that manners matter. Poss says she’s doing just that.
“The first few years of elementary school truly set the stage for how a child will view their time in school,” says Poss, “and Mrs. Whitton makes sure every child that walks into her classroom is loved and valued and experiences the joy of learning!”
Elizabeth Whitton received her bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from The University of Alabama. She and her husband, Matt, have two children, Parker (3) and Mcool (1).
